Roll up the rim? More like the carpets! If you want an instant summer update for your home, follow these tips for a seasonal re-style that will put the spring back in your step and kick the winter blues to the curb.

Lamp Shades Switch out darker lamp shades for lighter ones. If you can find pink light bulbs (try online), swapping those with your usual white it makes a big difference. And under no circumstances should you use those hideous compact fluorescent bulbs! If we don’t buy them, manufacturers will be forced to come up with something better and hopefully less offensive to lamps and skin everywhere.

Slip Covers Invest in a pair of sturdy, well made light coloured slip covers. A set in white, tan or a pastel shade made of linen, cotton will not only make it seam as if you have bought all new furniture but will help lift the mood of any room.

Drapes If you can, remove your drapes completely and let the sunshine in. If that’s not an option, swap out your winter drapes for lighter sheers or cottons with a beautiful floral or nautical design, or even a french ticking stripe. This will add a softness and airy feel to your space

Bed Linens A very easy change to make is your bed linens. Pale blues, cool mauves or mint green (this season’s hot colour), will add that certain subtle sexy backdrop making any spring fling more memorable.

Carpets If you have hardwood, concrete or tile floor and usually cover them with area carpets, do yourself a huge favour and roll them up for the season. If, like me, you layer carpets such as persians on sisals for example, eliminate your heavier patterned rugs leaving the sisals to herald the coming of warmer weather. This one thing will make a huge impact on your space so give it try!

Scent I have said it before and will say it again! The most important element of any interior is scent. It is the first thing people notice when walking into your home so be sure it always smells amazing. There are so many ways to add incredible scents to your home. Scented candles: my favourites include Dyptique’s mimosa and fig. Room atomizers: I really like those by India Hicks, fresh flowers such imperial lilies, peonies, hyacinths, and don’t be afraid to chuck some fresh herbs into your arrangements such as, mint, lavender, lemon thyme. You’ll be surprised how the scent carries and lasts. Also, big china or colourful resin bowls or platters filled with lemons, limes, oranges, grapefruit, even pineapples will add a huge spalsh of colour and texture and a surprising amount of fragrance to your home

Clear the Decks If you can only do one thing this spring, be sure to EDIT your space. Get rid of junk, be ruthless, clear all surfaces; your counter top, your coffee/cocktail table. Night stands, vanity, hall tables, etc. It costs nothing and makes a huge difference to the look of your space and how you feel in it.

Outdoor Space If you are lucky and have a garden, terrace or even a little city balcony don’t forget about it. There are so many options to make these spaces more attractive and useful. Outdoor furniture has come along way. Outdoor carpets too have advanced to the point where I use them indoors. Plant pots with herbs and colourful annuals such as geraniums for the immediate french feel or succulents and to evoke that Palm Springs vibe.

What ever you do this spring and summer to lift your home out of the winter doldrums, remember that less is more and in some cases more is more. I’ll let you be the judge. After this rotten winter just have fun and let me know how these tips worked out for you. Here’s to sunshine, warmth and to springing forward!
